Lutein has been proved to have the ability to remove singlet oxygen groups and peroxide radicals, and it protects human retina from injury through blue-light infiltration and antioxidation. Although the validity of lutein to prevent or treat various eye diseases has been revealed by clinical trials, the exact mechanism is not definitely known, which leaves room for clinical and laboratory researches. The laboratory research progress of roles and mechanisms of lutein in eye diseases is reviewed in this paper, and major eye diseasesassociated animal models and cells in laboratory researches for lutein are introduced.
