Abstract: Atrial fibrillation is a common cardiac arrhythmia encountered in the clinical practice with a complex pathological mechanism, which is closely related to structural remodeling such as atrial fibrosis. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is the only chimeric member of the galectin family and is considered as a biomarker of fibrosis; therefore, it may be involved in atrial remodeling in the patients with atrial fibrillation. This article reviews literatures on the association of Gal-3 with atrial fibrillation.

Key words: galectin-3 (Gal-3), atrial fibrillation, atrial fibrosis
