Research progress in the mechanism of ferroptosis and its role in liver related diseases

Abstract: Ferroptosis is a type of cell death caused by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) can prevent ferroptosis by converting lipid peroxides into nontoxic lipid alcohols under normal condition. However, recent studies have shown that ferroptosis in hepatocytes is one of the factors that induce and aggravate various liver diseases such as alcoholic fatty liver disease. Thereby, inducing ferroptosis of cancer cells by inhibiting GPX4 may be a new strategy for the treatment of liver cancer. This article reviews the molecular mechanism of ferroptosis and its role in liver related diseases, in order to provide new research directions and ideas for the treatment of liver diseases.
